The Merchant's Yard - Sustainability &
Our Local Community

At The Merchant’s Yard, we believe both we as a business and the guests we host should leave a place better than it was before.

We are so proud of where we are based and genuinely feel the responsibility of our role in not only welcoming visitors to the beauty of the Peak District, but in giving back wherever we can, empowering positive impact on the environment, local economy, and community.

Our Commitment to the Environment

We actively work to reduce our carbon footprint in a number of ways, including:

  • Minimising car dependency through support of walking and cycling routes in Tideswell

  • Installing EV chargers in 5 of our 10 car park guest spaces, primarily used for rooms guests but available for all visitors when not required

  • Secure bike storage on-site

  • Regularly reviewing our energy use

  • Partnering with suppliers who prioritise low-waste, recyclable and reusable packaging wherever possible

  • Minimising food waste through careful portioning and food composting initiatives (our chef uses most of it on his allotment!)

  • Using refillable toiletries in our rooms (rather than miniatures or disposables)

  • Recycling glass, cardboard, plastic and kitchen oil as part of a structured waste plan

Supporting Local

We support local wherever possible:

  • Prioritising local suppliers, trades and produce wherever we can

  • Hosting and catering for community events and celebrations

  • Promoting respectful and responsible visitor behaviour when making recommendations

  • Paying staff fairly and supporting continuous training and development
